Learn Pysanky (Ukrainian Egg Decorating)

Beeswax, Dye, and Ancient Art: Learn Ukrainian Egg Decorating This August

Explore a beautiful and ancient art form! Learn Pysanky (Ukrainian Egg Decorating) at Tri Arts Project introduces adults (Ages 16+) to the stunning batik tradition of Ukrainian egg decoration using beeswax and dyes. Led by instructor Leslie Barstad, this 2-session class walks participants through the complete start-to-finish process — from sketching a design to applying wax, dyeing in layers, and the final finishing techniques. All supplies are included!

Designed for beginners, this 2-session Thursday evening course runs August 13 and 20. All art supplies are provided — bring an optional apron or clothes you don't mind staining.

What You'll Learn in This Pysanky Class

  • Start-to-Finish Process: Apply the complete pysanky method: marking a design in pencil, applying melted beeswax with a stylus (kistka), dyeing the egg in successive colors, and removing the wax when finished.
  • Finishing Techniques: Apply appropriate techniques for properly finishing and preserving your completed Ukrainian egg as a lasting keepsake.
