Charcoal: Portrait Drawing

Draw a Realistic Portrait in Charcoal: A Focused One-Day Workshop

Learn to draw compelling portraits in charcoal! Charcoal: Portrait Drawing at Tri Arts Project is a focused workshop for adults (Ages 19+) with at least basic drawing experience. Led by instructor Leigh Anne Lewis, you'll begin with the fundamental proportions of the face, then add rich value using black and white charcoal pencils on toned paper. After a guided demonstration, you'll follow step-by-step through the process to create your own finished portrait. All supplies included.

Suitable for basic through advanced levels — some prior drawing experience is required, though portrait experience is not. This single Saturday afternoon session runs 3 hours. All supplies are fully provided.

What You'll Create in This Portrait Drawing Workshop

  • Facial Proportions: Learn the standard proportions of the human face and how to use darks and lights in charcoal to bring features to life.
  • Portrait Rendering: Apply charcoal drawing and shading techniques to create a finished, realistic portrait drawing with depth and personality.
